So what is External Rendering?

External Rendering is the name of the Plastering application of Sand/Cememt Mortar to the outside of a Building. Performed in the correct manner External Rendering requires 2 coats:

• A Scratch-coat
• A Top-coat

The purpose of the Scratch-coat is to take out any major discrepancies in the flatness (Not necessarily level) of the existing wall structure and also to give the Top-Coat something to 'key' to.

The Top-coat is usually applied to the dried Scratch-coat, ruled off, rubbed over with a fibreglass or a wooden float and then polished up with a damp sponge to achieve a flawless finish.

Is External Rendering messy?

There's no way round it, yes, External Rendering is messy. For Rendering, the Mortar must be mixed to a wet consistency making it prone to splashing. The Mortar must be firstly mixed in a Cement Mixer, transported via Bucket or Wheel-barrow to it's required destination and then applied. This does mean that there is mess, unfortunately. NRP cannot speak for how messy other External Rendering services could be, but we can vouch for our own commitment to providing you with a 1st class service from start to finish. NRP will always endeavour to leave your property as tidily as we found it and cover all surfaces with tarpaulin sheets before commencing any External Rendering project.

External Rendering, when done badly, can look absolutely terrible. The slightest of dips or lumps and it's there for life. Especially when the Sun comes out.
