Plastering work is increasingly thin on the ground at the moment owing to the current economic climate. This also means that plastering apprenticeships are also harder to come by. But not impossibly so.

How do Plastering Apprenticeships work?

A company requires dedicated employees that can offer practical skills which are then built upon and expanded with technical knowledge acquired by the apprentice attending college/university. This is usually on a day release basis whereby you would attend work for 4 days and college or university for 1. The exact terms of plastering apprenticeships will vary according to the company in question. Those people that successfully complete their plastering apprenticeships will be awarded a NVQ, Key skills qualification and a Technical certificate.

How long do Plastering Apprenticeships take?

Plastering apprenticeships can take anything between 12 months to 5 years to complete. The length of an individuals apprenticeship will depend on a number of factors. These may include:

  • Personal ability
  • Employers requirements and expectations
  • Personal commitment

Do I need to be employed to start plastering apprenticeships?

No. If you already have an existing plastering job then you may still be entitled to free plastering apprenticeships. However, most of you will be looking for a position which enables you to both earn and learn. And rightly so.

What kind of person can cope with Plastering Apprenticeships?

Please remember, plastering apprenticeships are very hard to come by. Make sure that plastering is really for you before taking a place from someone that wanted it more than you.

You will need to be:

  • Dedicated
  • Prepared to go into further study
  • Aware of how much work is required from you
  • Able to work on your own initiative or as part of a team
  • Able to full demonstrate your understanding of the plastering trade and that you are, indeed, the right person for the job.
  • Fully aware of your company and personal responsibilities

What qualifications do completing Plastering Apprenticeships give you?

successfully completed plastering apprenticeships will gain you a package of qualifications. These are:

  • A national vocational qualification (NVQ)
  • A technical certificate such as a BTEC national diploma or a city and guilds progression award
  • A key skill qualification

Apprenticeships will usually lead to an NVQ level 2 or 3.

In the meantime, there are a number of other things you can do to pick up the plastering trade and pick up a hawk and trowel is the first and most important thing you should do. To be able to use a hawk and trowel you need to be comfortable using them. If you haven't already, go and get yourself a decent set of tools. You must get a good trowel. I have only ever used marshalltown trowels for plastering. This probably makes me a little biased but I think it seems to be the general consensus amongst us plasterers.
