Plastering Materials | UK Plastering Materials
This page has been set up in response to the number of emails received regarding the best Plastering materials to use for interior domestic plastering projects.
As there are a number of factors that determine our personal views on the best plastering materials to use when skimming, bonding or floating + setting we thought we ought to let others in on what we know about plastering materials.
Plastering materials are not all created equally. There are products that plasterers use and products aimed at the sunday diyer. If the sunday diyer products were any good, real plasterers would use them. They don't.
So the worst mistake you could make when going out to get your plastering materials would be to go picking up bags of one coat wonder. It is useless.
Sorry to the companies that make these types of Plastering materials but I don't know a single plasterer that would use anything akin to them!
What brand of plastering materials do NRP recommend?
NRP recommend the use of Thistle products. This is what we have used from day one, so it probably makes us a little biased with regard to plastering materials, but I would say that is the general opinion amongst plasterers too. Correct me if I am wrong?
What types of plastering materials are needed for domestic plastering?
For the most part, the materials required for most usual interior plastering projects will be bonding, finish, PVA and Fibretape (scrim).

The bonding will be for repairing blown patches of plaster, chases left by wiring or leveling dips and bumps.
The finish will be for the final coat of plaster that gets decorated.

The PVA is needed to seal the old walls before plastering, to stop rapid drying and cracking.

The fibre-tape or scrim is used to tape over cracks and gaps before applying a finish coat.

The beads will be for external corners and forming angles around windows etc.
You will occasionally require other materials but these are your mainstay.
So where can you buy plastering materials?
You can walk into any diy store and buy the materials for plastering. I recommend using the larger chainstores. They are usually quite a bit cheaper. On the whole though, plastering materials are actually very cheap. If you were going to be doing a bit of bonding and then skimming a standard sized room then £50 should get you some change.
